To Whom It May Concern:

ART COUNCIL GRANT GIVES AMETHYST STUDENTS FOUR DAYS OF INTENSIVE ART TRAINING WITH RENOWNED ABORIGINAL ARTIST, MOSES BEAVER

Becoming involved with the Arts Council project was natural for Moses Beaver, an accomplished native artist from Nibinamik (Summer Beaver), Ontario.

Mr. Moses Beaver received a grant from the Ontario Arts Council enabling him to participate in a four day program with the Amethyst Provincial Demonstration School for Students with Learning Disabilities in London, Ontario. 49 students from Grades 7 to 10 participated in every aspect of this visual art project from black line pencil sketches, to an acrylic or watercolour painting and concluded with a large group aboriginal image canvas painting.

During the four day event, students described what it was like to be part of the experience:

Trevor writes, “Moses told me that a picture that looks like nothing can have a story.”

Drew writes, “I have learned that native art can tell a story and it is different to every person.”

Steph states, “Thank you for teaching me about your culture and different ways to paint.”

Cathleen says, “He encouraged everyone to do their best and in doing that, he brought out many unknown talents.”

Sam says, “You helped me to see the artist in me.”

Nathan tells us that, “Moses is a good teacher and a great artist.”

Cassie writes, “He taught me to paint with my inner self.”

Codi states, “Moses Beaver has taught us how to do colourful Aboriginal Art and how to give the art a little more character.”

The experience of being part of the project is a benefit to everyone involved. It developed an awareness and appreciation of native culture and art and allowed the students to experiment in the creative process from image to several pieces of polished art.

I would also like to thank the Art teacher, Jennifer Sontrop, for organizing this wonderful visual art experience. On behalf of our students, with the success of our first year program, we hope Moses Beaver can return in a subsequent school year.
