Woodland Spirits Film - 2007

Three generations of Woodland (Anishinawbe) artists are featured in this documentary exploring the interconnections between modern and ancient art, the land, and the importance of the traditional Ojibway values of mentorship and teaching. We follow painter Moses Beaver as he seeks the wisdom of elder-artist Gelineau Fisher, inspiring him to take on the mentorship of a young artist named Andrew Machendagoos. Everyone in the film is woven together through their connection to the late Woodland painter Roy Thomas, whose legacy continues to inspire others to create and to teach ancient values nearly lost. Filmed across Northwestern Ontario, this Thunderstone Pictures/NFB/TVO co-production features ancient rock paintings, stunning scenery, powerful art, great music and wilderness adventure.
