Ear Falls Public School in Kenora

"Storytelling Through Colour and Imagery" at Ear Falls Public School in Kenora, from May 8th until May 19th. The staff and students felt very lucky to have Moses (Amik) Beaver in the school. Moses is an aboriginal artist from the small remote reserver of Summer Beaver. He has worked extensively in schools with youth, both mainstream and special education, aboriginal and non-aboriginal. Moses spent two week s at the school working on various projects with all students. He played his flute and drew caricatures for the JK’s, SK’s, and grade ones. The grade 2/3 and 3/4 classes learned about totem poles and their importance in aboriginal life. They created totem poles from cardboard boxes, and decorated them with pictures, to tell the story of their lives. The grade 4/5 and 7/8 classes got a special treat-they made masks. This was a long process, and they learned about some native culture prior to making the masks. Once their unique masks were created, the students presented them in play form. Everything that Moses taught the students was presented at an assembly. The parents and students were amazed at what Moses taught the children in such a short amount of time. The students were able to describe their totem poles, Moses played the flute, and made loon calls, and the mask making classes presented their skits. The assembly was amazing, and all the kids will miss him dearly. This experience was truly one of a kind and an awesome opportunity for the students to learn about native culture from such a cultured man. We will all miss Moses!
